Crab Island is one of Destin's most famous attractions, but it hasn't always been the lively boating spot you see today. Originally, it was a small island formed by sand that had been dredged from the Destin Pass in the 1960's. The sand piled up above the waterline, creating a true island that locals nicknamed "Crab Island" because of how may crabs were found along its shallow shores.
Over time, shifting tides and hurricanes wore the island back down beneath the surface. Today, Crab Island isn't a dry island at all-it's a large underwater sandbar, covered by just a few feet of crystal-clear water. That shallow depth makes it perfect for anchoring boats, wading, and floating, which is why is has become a go-to gathering spot for boaters from all over.
From its beginnings as a simple sandbar, Crab Island has grown into a must-see destination in the heart of Destin, known for its fun atmosphere, stunning emerald waters, and unique floating playgrounds and food vendors.
